The light set on max brightness isn't harsh and overwhelming on the eyes, but you can still dim it and set the preferred brightness if you want. It comes with string and a metal wire thing so you can hang up the moon if you want to. There is a remote if you want to control the moon from afar, but it is not solely dependant on the remote. If the remote doesn't have batteries, you can still adjust the moon by touching the bottom of it. Tap the moon to switch colors and hold your finger on it to adjust brightness. The only thing you'll be missing out on is the timer function which the remote has.
