Yes, you need a compressor or a helium tank, you can not use lung power to inflate. On purchase the balloons are small, around 5-6" across, but they expand to about 20". I had no problem blowing up with a tank, I twisted the balloon around the inflater tube with just the tip inside the balloon. Super easy. Then to tie, just twist and twist and knot. I had no leakage prob after blowing up. Then, to get the wire on the balloon (think of wrapping a gift with ribbon) wrap the end around the knot, then go over the top and back to the knot. Loop it there then over again and end at the knot. Let extra dangle. They definitely float with helium, but the battery will tether it. I put on a table. Love, love.

And the string lights wrap around the balloon, no taping required. I hung them from the ceiling with fishing line and clear tacks. So stunning and worth the effort. I blew them up December 11th, and they are still perfectly inflated today December 23rd. I will absolutely be buying more.
