It allows you to remove a little or a lot of the gray based on your preference. He used it 4 days in a row and left it on for 5 minutes each time. The darker shade doesn't show up right away with each use it seems to develop over the day. Those 4 times got him where he wanted to be and now he used once a week, again leaving on for five minutes to keep his hair this way. If you have a medium or light grout in your shower, you will need to rinse it very well so it doesn't stain. He didn't fell like doing that so he uses this product at our stainless steel sink.
