I tried an axe, too much work and not much progress. I tried chain saw, with same results. I tried a reciprocating saw with aggressive wood blade, same results.
Saw and tried these grinder blades and shaved the roots down even with and below the ground surface in a couple of minutes. These are great. You could even grind down stumps with these.
