   This depth gauge performs a good job of measuring external and internal dimensions of of dados, cuts and routed grooves. The device is square and moves freely enough to quickly take a snapshot of how thick a material is or how wide a gap is. The locking screw allows the profile to them be matched up against another piece to ensure a precise fit. While all the same work can be done with a pair of calipers this tool does work a bit better on wodo due to a wider measuring area.

   This is a caliper designed with woodworking in mind. Its scale, range, and accuracy is appropriate for woodworking tasks and the 1” width helps assure a proper seating during measurement, largely eliminating the potential of a skewed reading.
   The gauge works well for capturing and locking a measurement for accurate repetition, with the corresponding inside/outside automatically gauged on the opposite end of the tool.
   I can't think of an outstanding usage for this beyond what the product description suggests. It's well suited for measuring gaps and material thickness; and mortise & tenons, particularly for simple ad-hoc or dado (circular saw, router/shaper) assisted joints.
   I had a similar problem as another reviewer in that the gauge arrived with the locking screw insanely over-tightened. I was able to free it with the added grip/padding of a rag, and in the end didn't have an issue with the threads, though they are slightly rough. I added a bit oil and it's smoothed some. And I expect it'll get better with further use.

   I absolutely love this little gizmo. I've had a few cheap plastic 'center finder' tools in the past, and was always sorry I had spent the money on them because they were clumsy to handle and a pain to use. first it was made out of heavy aluminum (not cheap plastic). Secondly, it was a more convenient and useable size (deep jaws that will stay put while I try to hold my work inside of it without having the template 'slip off' or move around). And a nice bright color that would make it easy to spot on my cluttered work bench. It is not the cheapest in price, but it reminds me again that you get what you pay for. I absolutely love this little guy, and you will too. I use it several times per day for centering work for my lathe and it's dead-on accurate and really a pleasure to use.
