Analog purists, get ready to clutch your pearls: S.E. Hinton’s classic tale of adolescent suburban gang wars, The Outsiders, will soon be available as an eBook. As a less-than-enthusiastic 61 year old S.E. Hinton put it, “I just figured you need to keep up with the times.”
Before you think it’s just a cash grab, Hinton allegedly loves the fanfiction based on her work so much that she’s written her own — under a pseudonym. Which is awesome, if not a little weird.
I loved The Outsiders in 8th Grade, even though our class was forced to read it, but less impressed with the movie adaptation. I’m hopeful that the digital release means a possible remake. Because if you’ve seen The Outsiders (which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starred the now famous actors above), you know it was crazy shitty. It’s ripe for a remake for a lot of reasons — namely that Hollywood loves remakes and 50s/60s-era films right now, along with anything that appeals to a younger demographic — but it’s also the perfect vehicle for new young stars. I’m already coming up with a fantasy cast, including The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson as Ponyboy. Also, they might be able to change some of those names because Jesus they were dumb — even to a 14-year-old.
In any event, this is good news because I’m getting increasingly frustrated with the number of authors or publishing houses who won’t release their work for the Kindle. You cannot fight the change to eReaders, and if these price-fixing lawsuits work out in favor of the consumers, there’s nothing stopping this progress train.
